BREEDING ~OF CUISINIER.

(By “The Cynic.”)

A four-year-old bay gelding, Cuisinier. winner of the Manawatu Plate is a son of Peach Brandy, a sire who has not had much opportunity since his importation and has left very few winners. His dam, Miss Quarantine, is a Quarantine mare who was dam earlier of the useful Leo Colossus. The family, descending through the Wanganui Derby winner Fame, is one that has produced many good horses, including such as Captain Webb. Dundee, Rangitero, and Aurora Borealis, and it is one with which the late Mr D. Buick had a lot of success. Cuisinier was bred by Mr D. Buick Junr., and he is owned by Mr N. M. McKenzie, for whom he is trained at Awapuni by Mr J. J. Waller. A Great Easter Candidate. Cocksure, winner of the Stewards’ Handicap at Oamaru, had only started’ once since he won the Flying Handicap on the same course last January. Patiently’ ridden over the early stages, Cocksure had no difficulty in cutting down the leaders and winning in the good time of lmin. 25 l-ssecs. This gallop will bring Cocksure under notice for the Great Easter Handicap, in which he .will have 231 b. less to carry.

Sound Breeding. The two-year-old Night Pal, winner of the maiden event at Oamaru, has interesting breeding, as he is by Nightmarch from Palantua, both New Zealand Cup winners. Night Pal was a source of anxiety at the starts of his early races, but with travelling and racing he has made marked improvement, and both at Riccarton and at Oamaru he gave little trouble and got away smartly. Provided he carries on in the same strain, Night Pal bids fair to be a good class .three-year-old. Like Palantua he is owned by his breeder, Mrs W> Mackenzie, of Dunedin, who is also racing Our Pal, a year older- brother to Night Pal.

Under a Disability. Dictate was obviously not himself , in the Oamaru Cup and his good effort in the circumstances was one of the features of the day’s racing. He took a dislike to the float in which he travelled to Oamaru, and after damaging the float and injuring himself he was taken out at Chertsey and was put into a vacant box on the horse train. Travelling from Sockburn to Oamaru he lost skin and flesh and injured his feet. He ripped off two shoes, but after treatment overnight he was considered fit enough to take his place in the cup. Dictate pulled up well, but was immediately withdrawn from his second day’s engagement. He has been unlucky in recent weeks and has not survived one meeting without having suffered some nature of injury. BAY OF PLENTY SECOND DAY’S RESULTS. . PIRATE KING WINS AGAIN.
