WOOL VALLES

LATE RATES .MAINTAINED THIRD AUCKLAND SALE. BETTER CLASSES IN KEEN DEMAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. ■Auckland opened the third wool sale with a catalogue of over 30.000 bales, setting a new record, before a bench of over sixty buyers. Bidding started briskly. ■ Competition was exceptionally keen for the better classes of wool but bidding was irregular for shabby sorts. Compared with the second sale in February, values appeared to be up about a halfpenny and much on a par with those in Wellington last week. However, it was impossible to make an exact comparison as much of today’s offerings was of inferior condition, a quantity was discoloured, a good deal tender and many lots carry more seed than usual. Taking all factors into consideraKon, the sale opened well. The first catalogue. 659 lots comprising 7740 bales, was sold in an hour and there was only a handful of passings. For fine crossbreds, average sorts brought 9d to LOd; inferior, 71 d to 8 Id. Average crossbreq, BAd to 9d; inferior, 71d to' B{d. Lambs: Fine, 9d to lOJd; medium, B£d to 9-id; seedy, 4-j.cl to 6Jd; bellies and pieces, good to super. 7d to 8d; low, 5d to 6Jd; crutchings, medium to good, 6Jd to 71d. As the sale proceeded the preliminary trend was confirmed, although the bidding seemed somewhat sticky for inferior grades. The second catalogue, comprising 1035 lots and containing 9248 bales, was completed shortly after 11.30 and of this, about five per cent was passed unsold. It now seems that the averages for the. sale may not reach those of January, namely BJd per pound, as today's offering includes a big percentage of lambs’ wool, much ofwhich is seedy, as well as bellies and pieces and this will bring down the general level. ____________
