AJAX BEATEN AT ROSEHILL.
MANAWATU SURPRISE WIN IN BIG RACE. SIRES’ PRODUCE STAKES TO SUBMISSION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N„ March 25. The autumn meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club concluded at Awapuni on Saturday in fine, cooler weather. with a fresh south-easterly breeze. Some surprises were in store for backers, Entail entering the winning list after a long series of “outs,” and beating the well-fancied Peerless and Gay Son in the Tamatete Handicap. It was Mr G. M. Currie’s meeting, as Submission, his first day’s winner, also won the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes brilliantly. This is the sixth time he has won this event, and the thirteenth occasion upon which the Koatanui stallions have provided the winner. There was a large attendance, and the totalisator turnover for the day was £30,035, against £28,367 10s for 1 the Saturday last year, an increase of £1667 10s. The total for the meeting was £52,979 10s, compared with £48,846 10s, an increase of £4133. The track was again firm and fast. Results: —

The surprise at the Rosehill meeting today was the defeat of Ajax in the Rawson Stakes by Spear Chief, whose victory was most popular. Few bookmakers operated on the race, Ajax being regarded as such a certainty. Heavy showers fell during the meeting.
After the second race Defaulter ran a mile. He started at an easy gait and was soon into his stride, covering the distance in 1.47.'. Defaulter did the last half mile in 50 seconds. The result of the Rawson Stakes, Im and If was:
Spear Chief, 9.0 (McCarten) 1 Ajax, 9.0 (Badger) 2 Allunga, 9.2 (Munro) 3 These were the only starters. Ajax immediately took the lead, closely followed by Allunga and Spear Chief. The order was unchanged till inside the distance, when Spear Chief came up quickly and beat Ajax by half a length, with Allunga a length and a quarter away third. Time, 1.52 J.
