STOWAWAY ON LINER
SERIOUS NATURE 'OF OFFENCE STRESSED; POINT ABOUT PROHIBITED IMMIGRANTS. ■ (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A stowaway, who boarded thd Dominion Monarch at Sydney,. Edward Michael Carroll, appeared before the Magistrate Mr W. T. Stilwell. The sehidiis nature of the offence was stressed on behalf of the Company. It was said that there were occasions when a ship had to piit back Some distance, also when a Ship on her way home had to put into such a port as GiSborfie, to discharge a stowaway. It only need a stowaway to be a prohibited immigrant and it would be seen how awkward it could be on a landing at the ship’s destination. The police said they were unable to say whether the accused was a prohibited. immigrant. Mr Stiltveil said: “I have ho power to deport him unless he is.”
A remand was granted, to enable the police to look into accused’s antecedents. ,
