Referring to the present programme of the Housing Department, which was aiming to build five thousand houses in the present year, necessitating the employment of three thousand more tradesmen, the Hon H. T. Armstrong, m an interview, slated that this would require a much greater quantity of seasoned timber and adequate kiln drying apparatus than was at presen available but the Government would either build its own kilns or indulge builders and omers to assist. Discussions were proceeding at present with that end in view. Mr Armstrong said he estimated that only twelve per cent of the machinery required for the enlarged programme would be imported the remainder being Dominion produced.
