RUNAWAY HORSE
MAD CAREER ALONG MAIN STREETS.
SERIOUS ACCIDENT AVERTED.
While a horse was being broken in on the Upper Plain Road yesterday afternoon it became startled by a motor-car and bolted, the driver being thrown out of the gig. The horse then commenced a mad career down Renall Street into Queen Street, from whence it turned into Worksop Road. Fortunately, it did not crash into any traffic, though it missed one car by about a foot and mounted the footpath when rounding the Knox Church corner. A pedestrian pluckily ran out at the latter point and succeeded in getting a grip on the reins, with the result that the runaway was pulled to the side of Worksop Road, not far past Dixon Street. The horse crashed rather heavily into a fence and bounded back towards the road but further progress was effectively stopped when the wheels of the gig straddled a lamp post, bringing down the horse, which by this time was pretty well exhausted. The incident had the possibilities of a serious accident, in view of the large amount of motor and other traffic on the roads. As it was, however, the gig suffered minor damage only, though the horse appeared to be badly shaken. It was soon unharnessed and got on its feet again.
