GRAIN AND PRODUCE

CANTERBURY MARKETS. TRADE REASONABLY BUSY. (By, Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 24. The grain and produce trade remains reasonably busy without any outstandingly active section. There is steady demand for most seasonable lines, but the position is somewhat complicated by a scarcity of certain seeds, such as ryegrass. Wheat deliveries have slackened off to a small volume. Quality has been high everywhere, but yields have been disappointing. Barley crops have been of exceptionally high quality this year, and yields have been good. The standard price for malting barley is 4s 73d. There is not a great inquiry for feed, which is selling at about 3s to 3s 3d. Peas are in fair request, and some first-class lines are available. The price is 6s 9d to 7s for outstanding good samples. Ryegrass of good germination is difficult to obtain. Good perennial with an 80 per cent test is worth 4s 6d to 5s oh trucks, with lotver-test seed at IdvVer rates. Italian of 80 per cent is worth 4s to 4s 6d. Cocksfoot is in fair request, and steady though nd large business is being done. Up to 73d is being paid for extra good samples of bright, heavy seed. Clovers are! moving steadily, the North Island showing some interest in red. White is worth Is to Is 3d and cowgrass 6d to 7d for choice lots of new bright seed. Potatoes are dull. The prompt market has slowed up because of the arrivals in the north earlier in the week, and there appears to be little interest in the forward position.
