STANDARD GERANIUMS
SHOULD BE GROWN MORE. More use should be made of the bright geraniums as standard flowers. It is dccidly useful when used or grown in this way. as it breaks up the monotony of the uniform level and brings the beauty of the plants up to the face level. Also, the standard gives scope for a ground mat of some suitable plant and it is possible, to get some very brilliant effects.
The geranium flowers profusely during the hottest of weather and that, too, without the aid of the watering can.
Crimson linums are particularly good, and even blue ones, as these stand up well to dry conditions and flower a long time.
The standards may be obtained by growing on strong cuttings from any vigorous variety to a single stem until the required height is reached, then, nipping out the point of each one, and the side shoots or laterals two or three times, to form the head. They are useful, too, as tub plants, giving an opportunity of planting another plant at the base such as a nice showy red or purple verbena. More use should be made of ivy-leaved geraniums as these never fail in the driest of seasons, and are ideal for hot. sunny banks, covering unsightly tree stumps, and for growing in tubs.
