BARAN A GOOD COLT
(By
"The Cynic”)
The Bulandshar colt Baran, who was injured when returning to Hastings from a successful visit to the New Zealand Cup meeting in November, reappeared at the Trehtham autumn meeting. Carrying top weight he made a very prominent showing in the Pacific Handicap on the first day, but was obviously short of racing condition, and he closed up quickly after leading until within 100 yards of the post. At a furlong less on Saturday, Baran again showed brilliant speed, and appeared a likely winner until the improving Gayest Son took the race ofi hiiin in the last stride. Baran is growing into a tall colt, and has not made the same physical development as some of the other more prominent horses of his age. At the same time he is a good one. and the two races he had at Trentham are sure, to tune him. up. If he goes to Auckland at Easter, he will add much interest to the juvenile racing there. Golden Sheila. Golden Sheila has been racing consistently but somewhat unluckily' in recent weeks and with an ounce of luck she may have won on either day of the Ohinemuri meeting. Still handily placed in the weights as she is Golden Sheila may soon emulate her achievement in the Vercoe Handicap at Te Rapa. t Back in Work. The two-year-old Konneta appears to have made a good recovery from her recent leg ailment and is back on the tracks at Ellerslie. Providing she goes on the right way, Konneta should be fit to race at Easter, when one of her engagements will be the Great Northern Champagne Stakes.
Full of Scotch. While he failed on either day of the Paeroa fixture Full of Scotch was noticably bearing a bright and healthy appearance and the fact that he finished close up behind the' placed division on both occasions suggested that, with the easing of the tracks, he will soon be seen to better advantage.
To Race at Tauranga. After racing at Paeroa, the Ellerslie horses Spinning Wheel and Ohmaha went on to Tauranga, where they are to fulfil engagements at the Bay of Plenty Racing Club’s meeting tomorrow and Monday. Both horses have been racing well but unluckily, and aie due to give their trainer, W. J. Fergus, a turn of success.
Schooling Well. Inness Lad. who. it will be recollected. won the Bay of Plenty Steeples and Otara Hurdles on the same day of the Tauranga winter fixture last year, is to contest jumping events at the approaching meeting and as he has been schooling well at headquarters there is every reason to assume that the old adage of "horses for courses ’ may be borne out. over the weekend. He failed at Te Aroha but. judging by his present appearance, racing at Herriesville has had a beneficial effect. Glen Abb. Following his fine second to Galilee in the Franklin Cup, Glen Abb put up a meritorious performance to finish right up behind the placed division in the Shaw Handicap at Paeroa and a winning bracket for this consistent performer would not be out of turn. If taken through to Tauranga he will bear watching as- he is a particularly fit horse at present.
Should Atone. Heavily backed to win the Hikutaia Hack Cup, The Cardinal made an inglorious showing. A fine type of three-vear-old by Night Raid Palestrina, The Cardinal- has raced encouragingly in the past, and he is likely to make amends on bigger tracks than Paeroa.
Consistent. There are few more consistent hacks than Eastern Heir, who was narrowly beaten in the Hack Cup at Paeroa. A full-brother to The Buzzer, he is a hardy type who may win an open handicap at. four years old.
Improved. An improving youngster to score at Paeroa was Brazen Bold, who confirmed his form by running second to Heroic Maid in his second venture. Brazen Bold did not have all the luck the second day. and he promises to again be hard to beat at Tauranga.
A Fortune Won. Before the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Flemington on March 5, J. T. Jamieson, trainer of High Caste, said the giant colt would win by half a furlong (says a Melbourne writer). High Caste did not gain the honours as easily as that, but he outclassed all except the. placegetters, ~and came home with his ears pricked. Zonda, who finished-' second, and Aurania, third, were both decidedly unlucky at critical stages of the race, but probably High Caste could not have been beaten in any case. High Caste was backed for a fortune. Only Wilson and Zonda were backed against him. Four bets of £lOOO to £125 were laid against Zonda, and £lOOO to £175 was the best bet against Wilson.
Mea Mea. . The Lackham gelding Mea Mea. who won the final event at Trentham, also won at the Wellington Cup meeting. He won the January Handicap with 7.12 in Imin. 39secs., and on the third day with 8.5, ran The Bigot (8.7) to half a length in the Thorndon Handlcap, won in Imin. 39Asecs. Hine Went, the dam of Mea Mea, was got by Arausio—Te Aupaki, by Merry Moment —Timua, by Birkenhead. Te Aupaki ig the dam of Toxeuma, who won the Winter Cup in 1930 with 11.5, the highest weight ever successfully carried in the race.
Scold. , , Scold, who was one of the quartette who went across the line almost together in the Plunket Nursery Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, was bred by Mr G. Murray Aynsley, being by Myosotis from Berate, who was contemporary with Silver Scorn and Silver Ring. Berate was a very unlucky mare in racing, but she is proving herself at the stud.
