BOARD OF GOVERNORS s MEET. SUCCESS OF GALA DAY. The chairman, Mr W. R. Nicol, presided at the monthly .meeting of the Wairarapa College Board of Governors, held'last night. Others present were: Messrs P. M; Smith. W. H. Saunders, A. Donald. F. C. Daniell and E. J. Wright. The Principal, Mr G. G. Hancox, re ■ ported that the roll number at the day school was boys, 287; girls, 237;.t0tal 524. On March 17 there were 251 pu - pils enrolled in the evening classes. Mr R. Savage, the Department’s architect, visited the College during the month; Mr V. McKeague, Wairarapa diving champion, gave an exhibition of diving at the college baths; the senior pupils attended the civic reception to Lord Nuffield; and Mr T. W. Stringer, Traffic Inspector, addressed the pupils on the subject of . road safety. During Keep Fit Week the cadets. Pipe Band and the girls’ physical culture group assisted in the programme arranged by the organising committee. It was reported that the recent Gala Day, organised by the Parents' Association, had resulted in the sum of £lB3 being raised. It was decided to write and congrarulate the association on the success of the Gala Day. The chairman said :: was a wonderful success.
Congratulations are to be extended to the College Pipe Band on its performances at the recent contest at Christchurch, and the St. Andrew Society is to be thanked for raising th? sum of £5O towards the travelling expenses.
It was stated that the Public Works Department was making good progress with the kerbing. levelling and tn" sealing of the grounds. The now snorts area had been kept cultivated durm* the summer, and would be ready for sowing when a good rain occurred. It was reported that the Prinr-m n i and Mr C. J. Williams attended tb“ annual training course of the composite regiment at Waiouru during February, and that Mr R. J. Fowler was at present in camp with the Hauraki Regiment. •
It was decided to congratulate Miss Gillian Gooder on being awarded a Fine Arts Bursary tenable for three years at Canterbury College. The question of dealing with any matters that. might arise in connection with the accommodation of West School pupils at the College was referred to the Principal and the executive committee.
In reply to two applications it was decided to extend cordial invitations to the Anglican Diocesan Summer Schoo] for men and lhe Teachers' Summer School to hold their annual camps at Wairarapa College sub’ect to arrangements being made to the anpoval of the Principal and the executive. It was decided to supplement by £26 for office work the Trust Lands Trust grant of £26 for librarian assistance so as to permit a full-time appointment to be made. Miss Pauline Dixon was appointed to the position.
