The death occurred yesterday at Marton of Mrs Mary Ann Louisa Dickens, widow of the late Mr Alfred Dickens, of Pongaroa, at the age of 58 years.
The Hon F. Jones, Minister of Defence, left Wellington for the south by the inter-island express steamer last night. He will return to Wellington on Monday. The Hon. H. T. Armstrong, Minister of Housing, left Wellington this morning for Palmerston North on housing business. The Minister expects to return to Wellington tomorrow. For business reasons Mr H. H. Higgins has resigned his position as president of the Wellington Manufacturers’ Association. Mr W. Stevens has been appointed to fill the vacancy.
After completing a 2| years’ engagement in New Zealand as Chief of the Air Staff, Group Captain the Hon R. A. Cochrane will leave for England by the Mataroa, which is scheduled to sail from Wellington tomorrow for Southampton. He was officially bade farewell by the Government at an afternoon tea gathering yesterday in the office of the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, in Parliament Buildings. ■ The death occurred recently at Makara, of Mr Harry Jervis, who arrived in New Zealand in 1886, on the ship Coptic, from Shropshire, England, as a young man of 21. Mr Jervis at first worked for a bricklayer named Travers, but shortly afterward joined the employ of the late Mr William Moxham at Upland Farm, which is now Kelburn. The Makara estate also belonged to Mr Moxham. Mr Jervis went there, first as manager, and later purchased the property.
