LAUGHING LASS WELL PLACED.
(By
“The Cynic.’’)
Unlucky to have lost the Thompson Handicap last week, the big roan mare Laughing Lass has her chance to make amends at the Manawatu meeting this week. Laughing Lass in on a handy mark with 8.0 in the J. M. Johnston Memorial Handicap on Friday, and a repetition of her Trentham form would make her very hard to beat.
Swordstick’s Easy Win. After failing over a similar distance at Cromwell on the second day, Swordstick was not fancied in the Waimate Cup on Saturday and allowed to return the best dividend of the day. At Cromwell Swordstick carried 8.7, and on Saturday, with 161 b less on his back, he set the field such a solid pace that he had them all beaten a long way from home. His owner, who has previously won many races on this course,, really sent Swordstick up as a matter of courtesy, and was not sufficiently interested in his running to attend the fixture himself. Swordstick’s win secured him £155 in stakes and a very handsome silver tea service to add to his already over-crowded sideboard of trophies.
Two Promising Juveniles. Homing, who showed some prominence in The maiden event at Waimate is a two-year-old filly by Night Raid from Homedale, bred and owned by Mr E. Steele, proprietor of the Elderslie Stud. Homedale is an Australianbred mare, by Rossendale from Hasten Home, by Holiday House, and she won jsome good races in Australia before l being retired to the stud. Homing, who is trained by J. Ross at Oamaru, was making her first appearance in public at Waimate, and displayed a marked turn of speed while she lasted. A yearing colt by Solicitor-General from Homedale was purchased at Trentham in January for 650 guineas by the Hon A. Crofts, owner of the Newmarket Handicap winner, El Golea. Dinah Dhu created a good impression by her fast finishing run in the same race, and but for being slow away she would have made the task of the winner. Ferriby, much more difficult. She is a well-grown two-year-old by the Hurry On horse Caledon, from Sandra by Claro, from Lady San by San Francisco, and is owned by Mr D. O. Rutherford, for whom she is trained by A. J. Martin. Dinah Dhu has not been hurried, and next season may find her a useful stake-earner.
Rebel Mate for Great Easter Handicap. Rebel Mate, who had not had a race since the New Zealand Cup Meeting, last November, looked well, but slightly on the big side, when paraded for the open sprint handicap at Waimate. Jumping out smartly, he was in front all the way and won nicely. He ran the six furlongs in Imin 13 l-ssec, a good performance under 9.4, and will be one of the fancied division in the Great Easter Handicap next month under 8.8.
A Prospect. Lutanist, a fine big colt by Constant Son from Lute String, who carries the colours of Mr Herbert Gaisford, wag’ an impressive winner at the Auckland summer meeting. Lutanist has been pleasing the critics at Woodville and he is to contest the two-year-old handicap events at Awapuni this week. He will find plenty of support in the Cloverlea Nursery Handicap tomorrow.
Density at Trentham. The opinion that Density would shape well in the sprint events at Trentham was supported by her show-; ing on the second day, when she was apparently improved by her first race at the meeting. She was handled by a novice rider, and the fact would not be to her advantage if any truth exists in the law that experience teaches. She at least beat several of the more fancied candidates.
Laughing Lass Unlucky. From all accounts, Laughing Lass was unlucky to miss a win in the Thompson Handicap. She had to make up ground in the straight and at the finish was travelling faster than the winner. After the race Laughing Lass showed evidence of being put on the fence at some stage of the race, but apparently no inquiry was held into the matter if it did assume seriousness. Beaupartir. When Beaupartir gained his/ first classic success in the New Zealand St LegeT Stakes, he established the claim made for him that he is a good colt, although not perhaps in the first flight. This was Beaupartir’s second win, his first having been secured in the King’s Plate at Ellerslie. In six of his other Seven races Beaupartir has been second. being runner-up to Disdain in the C.J.C. Spring Plate and to Defaulter in the Derbies. In his only race as a two-year-old he was second to Ivar. He has now won £1405 in stakes.
Sulieman’s Breeding. Sulieman has established a claim to be considered one of the best sprinters
in commission. He is a short-pedigreed horse got by Acre from Quinkama by Quin Abbey—Kakama by Soult —Winsome by Cuirassier —Winnie by Kingfisher —Dolly Varden by Pacific —Brun-, ette by Van Tromp. Although short pedigreed, the tap root has produced some good winners notably through Winnie, the dam of Belmont, St Simon and Record Reign. Night Dress. ■ Night Dress was travelling on at the finish of the Waimate Cup and once again created the opinion that he is not a boy’s horse. Night Dress may have a mind of his own about racing and it requires an experienced rider to make him act the right way. At Aintree. 1 One of the popular selections for the coming Liverpool Grand National is Miss D. Paget’s Kilstar, an eight-year-old gelding by Boris. About a month ago he was at one-fourth the odds offered earlier. He is bein,* trained by O. Anthony. While the latter has some of Miss Paget’s jumpers, W. Nightingale has others. From horses in the charge of her two trainers, Miss Paget made 11 entries for the Imperial Cup, a two miles hurdle race to be run at the Grand Military Meeting at Sandown Park this month. The Favourites. Trench Fight and Rebel Mate have been made favourites for the Great Easter. Royal Chief, Wild Chase, Haughty Winner, Peerless, Queen of Song, and Dictate share the position in connection with the Great Autumn.
