BREEDING OF PEERLESS
(By "The Cynic”)
Peerless is on the way to being another Cuddle for Mr R. J. Murphy, whb paid 425 guineas for her as a yearling. She is as much at home in handicaps as in classic races, and now her record to date reads five wins and nine placings in 22 starts for £2770 in stakes. It is probable that she will be sent south at Easter for the Great Easter and Great Autumn double in preference to going north for the classics, unless she receives more than the anticipated weight in the handicaps. A bay filly of good proportions and standing over a lot of ground, Peerless is a daughter of Beau Pere and the Limond—Homage mare Prestige, a full-sister to Honour, Episode, and Courtcraft, hence she is another member of the highly successful Eulogy family. Prestige herself did not do a deal of racing, but she was a.winner in Australia before going to the stud.
FltH’fvnce Mills. Florence Mills is a four-year-old brown mare by Nigger Minstrel from th? 'Lord Quex—Lovematch mare Liaison, hence she is a full-sister to Quadroon, winner of the Parliamentary and Wellington Handicaps on the Trentham course during the last twelve months. It is a pedigree that suggests stamina, but this mare has so far been purely a sprinter. She is raced by her breeder, Mr H. H. Pharazyn, of Hastings, and her record now comprises six wins and three seconds in 17 starts for £1220 in stakes. The celebrated Hebrew Maid family to which Florence Mills belongs appears to have a particular penchant for the Trentham course. Menelaus was an important winner there, and Gaine Carrington won his first race on the track. At the last four meetings its representatives have enjoyed success, Quadroon last winter, Quadroon and Florence Mills in the spring, Old .Bill (a half-brother to these horses) land Beau Vite in the summer, and now Mills and Beau Vite again. Florence Mills's grandam (Lovelorn) is a full-sister to Beau Vite’s dam (Dominant). RACING FIXTURES March 23, 25. —Oamaru J.C. March 24, 25. —Manawatu R.C. March 25. —Birchwood H.C.
