HARRIER ACTIVITIES

KIATERE CLUB. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Kiatere Harrier Club which is to be presented at the annual general meeting to be held in the Y.M.C.A. on Wednesday, March 22, at 7.30 p.m. reads as follows: —On benalf of the committee, 1 have much pleasure in presenting the sixth annual report. The season’s activities were of a thoroughly enjoyable nature, good fellowship and harmony being evident throughout. In competitions the club met with a fair measure of success, the standard attained being well up to that of past seasons. Club trophies especially, were keenly contested, and were again well distributed. Although the active membership showed a slight decrease on the previous season, this was more than accounted for by the fact that the club had no junior runners. It is to be hoped however, that this section of the club will again function as every encouragement is given for boys to participate in the sport. The club is in a healthy position financially, for the season was commenced with a substantial credit balance which was consolidated during the year. The annual inter-club contest with the Olympic Harrier Club of Wellington for the Turnbull Cup was held, and resulted in a win for the Olympic Club. In the first meeting of the two clubs Kiatere on their home course, gained a lead, but were defeated by a greater margin of points in the return contest at Wellington. In the Dannevirke Harrier Rally the club entered in both «A and B grade events and against strong opposition Was placed second in each grade. A team represented the club in the A grade of the Wellington Provincial Cross Country Championship. Owing to many selected A grade runners being unable to travel the team was not at full strength. Under the circumstances, however, it made a very creditable showing. Races for individual honour were always interesting, as the club was fortunate in having a number of runners of about equal calibre. We wish to congratulate the following championship. winners: —W. McDonald, Hugh Morrison Rose Bowl for Ten Miles Club Championship; W. Burgess, The Mills Challenge'Cup for miles Club Championship; Alex McDonald, The Albert Cox Cup for 5 Miles Club Championship; and B. F. Falloon, the Batkin Cup for the Novice Championship. Honour was also brought to the club by W. McDonald and W. Burgess, who gained first and second respectively in the Wairarapa Ten Miles District Championship. The annual picnic was held at Mr J. H. Payton's Bush, and was highly successful, being Well patronised by members and supporters. For the use of the grounds for this outing the club is indebted to Mr J. H. Payton. Three dances were held during the season, and although the club has an enviable reputation in this direction, these socials surpassed all previous successes. For their valuable assistance at these functions, and throughout the season we wish to express our sincere thanks to the Ladies’ Committee, and to Mr A. L. Askew, whose help was also much appreciated. We are extremely grateful for the splendid donations of trophies and wish to thank the following donors:— Mrs C. Bill, Mrs R. C. Falloon, Mr J. McDonald, Mr Hugh Morrison, Mr B. F. Falloon, Mr J. C. Burns, and also Mr J. Ryder, Mr A. Scrimshaw and Mr J. Tapin for their generous donations to our funds. The club is indebted to Mr and Mrs J. L. Burns for the invitation run held from their residence, and entertaining members to afternoon tea, and also to Mr H. Scrimshaw and Mr A. J. F. Carter, for the enjoyable outing and supper accorded members at Morrisons Bush. We wish to thank the Masterton A. and P. Association for the use of dressing sheds at Solway Showgrounds, and the Press for their generous publicity of the club’s activiteis —For the committee, J. L. Burns, Hon Secretary.
