CARTERTON
WAIRARAPA BOWLING CENTRE. CHAMPION RINK COMPETITION. ("Times-Age” Special.) A start was made with the play in the Wairarapa Bowling. Centre’s champion rink competition bn Saturday afternoon in beautiful weather. The competition is being played on the Carterton Club's green which on Saturday was in capital order and played well. Afternoon tea was provided for the players, and a hearty vote of thanks accorded to the ladies, Mesdames W. Steven, H. H. L. Meyrick /’A-and Miss Edna McLean..' The games are played on tile sudden death system. The following are the results:— First round: Hyland, Ayre, Anderson, Bloxam (s), Featherston, beat Green, Williamson, Boyd, Yates (s), Martinbo'rough, 20/14; J. Skeet, Douglas, W. Hendry, Christian (s), Masterton, beat Rees, V. Vile, Kilgour, Higgison (s), Greytown, 24/19; Kilmister, Newbould, De Lacey, Hughan (s), Carterton, beat Emerson, Spackman, Southey, Kilgour (s), Park, 18/16. Second round: Featherston drew the bye and Carterton and Masterton have commenced the second game. When play stopped on the 16th head Masterton were leading Carterton by 19/13. CARTERTON v EKETAHUNA. On the Carterton green at the weekend the Carterton bowlers met Eketahuna. Upon arrival the visitors wera welcomed by the vice-president, Mr J. L. Harris, who hoped they would have • . a pleasant time. Morning tea was provided. Thompson (s) beat Tolley, Herbert, Rogers, Simpson (s) 24/12; Lynch, Steven, Nicholson, De Lacey (s) beat Pickering, W. Green, Maudsley, Hooper (s) 20/16; Boyne, Campbell, Riggs, Harris (s) beat Ramsey, M. Herbert, 'Amundsen, Hornblow (s) 27/15. After, 25 heads: Beale beat Whyte, 33/17; W. Hart beat Hooper, 29/17; R. Thompson lost to Hornblow, 23/29; De 4, Lacey beat Fredrickson 34/23; Harris lost to Simpson, 14/34. 'At the conclusion of play Mr W. Simpson thanked the Carterton players for their hospitality and for having provided a very fine day’s bowling. Cheers were exchanged and the visitors then left for home. i- ■ Personal. Constable' Bell, who has been reliev- > ing Constable Robertson, has returned to Wellington. Mr and Mrs Harry Hughan, of Pembroke Street, who have been on an extended motor holiday to the South Island, in which they visited most of the towns from Picton to Invercargill, returned home on Friday. Mr John Harding, of Wellington, spent the week-end with his parents. Mr and Mrs L. T. Harding, Rexwood Street. Messrs. D. G. Johnston and A. T. Murray returned on Sunday night after spending the week-end in Wanganui. Mrs A. E. Freer and daughters, Park Road who have been spending a fortnight at Paraparaumu Beach, returned home on Sunday. Cricket. The game, Carterton v College, which was set down for play on Saturday, was abandoned, Carterton failing to get a team together. Egg Laying Contest. The eighth egg laying contest concluded at Massey College, Palmerston North, on March 14. The contest lasted 50 weeks. The following Carterton poultry keepers qualified under the egg weight regulations and received prizes: Silver Egg Trophy, Mr J. Wilson’s Carterton White Leghorn team, 1621 eggs; Lord Greenway Cup to team of Rhode Island Reds laying the greatest number of eggs, Mr G. A. Edge, Carterton, 1222 eggs. The Red Club’s Rose Bowl to individual Rhode Island Red, G. A. Edge, 272 eggs. Certificates of merit to Messrs W. F. Stent and J. Wilson. , Successful Picnics. The Young Farmers’ Club and Women’s Division held a very successful picnic on the Clareville Racecourse on Saturday. A very enjoyable picnic was held by the Presbyterian Sunday School on Mrs Zabel’s property on Saturday. There was a large attendance and a splendid outing in beautiful weather was enjoyed by all.
