CARNIVAL IN THE PARK

GATHERINGS ON SATURDAY ATHLETIC & OTHER ATTRACTIONS GOOD FINANCIAL RESULT REPORTED. SPORTS & COMPETITION DETAILS There were merry and animated scenes at the Park Oval on Saturday afternoon and evening when the Beautifying Society and Y.M.C.A. concluded a most successful carnival week. Although the attendance in the afternoon was not quite up to expectations the crowd was sufficiently large to enable brisk and profitable'business to be done at the numerous wellstocked stalls. There was ample scope for entertainment and throughout the afternoon and evening the crowd of merrymakers spent a most enjoyable time. It was a fitting finale to a wellorganised and most successful efforton behalf of both organisations. Keen and interesting contests were witnessed in the afternoon when a programme of athletic events was staged, while the interhouse girls’ teams were given an enthusiastic reception when they gave a display of marching to music played by the Masterton Municipal Band. It was a spectacular display and the girls thoroughly deserved the warm ovation they received. Following them came a splendid massed display of marching and folk dancing by the pupils of Masterton primary schools and an item by the St. Matthew’s Cub Packs. Both events attracted keen interest and were most interesting.

In addition to the stalls, there were a number of attractive sideshows, the amateur proprietors of which appeared to be most successful in inveighling the elusive “bob” from willing and unwilling patrons. A pair of clowns, mounted on ancient bicycles, provided capital entertainment fbr the host of children.

The weather was again favourable in the evening, when there was a bumper attendance of the public and the stalls and sideshows did a roaring trade. A fireworks display and an exhibition of gymnastics by the Y.M.C.A. squad kept the public keenly interested. The boats on the lake were in great demand, while later in the evening the Municipal Band provided music for dancing on the Oval. The financial proceeds for the day and evening amounted to approximately £275. The athletic events resulted as follow: — 100 Yards. —Lees (Lower Hutt), 1; J. Ryder, 2; L. P. Ryan (Masterton), 3.
