RIVER IMPROVEMENTS
COMPLETION OF WORK NOW IN VIEW. FENCING OF STOCK ROUTE. The completion of the Waipoua River improvement works is now in view. Referring to the matter this morning, the borough engineer, Mr C. R. Mabson, said it was hoped to complete the work in a month or six weeks' time. He stated that men were still engaged in excavation work in the Park area, though this would be completed in a few days. The filling of a gap just below the Park and the formation of a bank along Colomba Road near the bridge, the latter to prevent flood waters from flowing backwards across the road, would then be put in hand. Some delay had been caused in the construction of the new swing bridge over the Waipoua River on account of difficulty in securing the required beams. These were now on hand, and other parts of the bridge were in readiness for assembly. The piers and anchors were already in place. It was hoped to have the bridge erected in about three weeks’ time. The fencing of the stock route, which would run along the southern bank of the river, would be started very shortly. The new stock route, Mr Mabson pointed out would pass under the first span of the second bridge over the Waipoua River and would thus eliminate the necessity for stock crossing the northern approach:
