GOOD EFFORT BY WOTAN'S SISTER

(By

“The Cynic.")

Kriemhild, a sister to Wotan, and who had had only two previous starts, was reserved for the final day of the Taranaki meeting, and there was a confident tone about the way she was supported for the Paritutu Juvenile Handicap and, had she not been ridden into the ground, she probably would have won, states an exchange. She and Race Away cleared out from the field, leading by six lengths from the third horse at one stage. Race Away dropped out a furlong from home, leaving Kriemhild to it, but she was caught in the last stride by Fils de Vaals and Mountain Fox in the closest finish of the meeting. Kriemhild resembles Peter Jackson more than Wotan in conformation and is a good type of two-year-old, who should win races for Messrs Smith. Made the Grade. Te Huia left a good impression when he led all the way with 9.9 in a hack race on the first day at Taranaki, and there was plenty of support for him when he tackled the open sprinters on Saturday. In this event he scored an easy win and it was not all due merely to his ability to handle the greasy track better than his opponents. Te Huia is a full brother to Silk Sox, a good class hurdler. Te Huia was tried as a hurdler 12 months ago, but was too keen and appeared likely to knock himself about. Like Silk Sox, he may do well on the flat before finally being put to hurdling. Disappointed. There was support at New Plymouth for the three-year-old filly Mazy, in the maiden 'events, but she did not justify it in either start, though she was badly away on the first day, losing all chance. Mazy is a three-year-old by Lord Warden from Mazatuko, and is a half-sister to Superex and Mazamarch. She is trained by W. H. Dwyer at Wanganui for Mr G. Lupton. , An Addition. An addition to I. Tucker’s team is the aged gelding Salva, who is a fullbrother to the useful hack The Trimmer. Salva, who made his first appearance at Pukekohe after a lengthy absence, has not done a great deal of racing, but when formerly in training about three seasons ago he ran third to Valamito and King Neptune in the Vauxhall Handicap at Ellerslie. Rapid Recovery. Tooley Street, who received injuries at the Te Aroha meeting, has made a more rapid recovery than was at first expected and has returned to the active list at Ellerslie. Tooley Street’s latest form has been consistently good, and he is to be prepared for the Easter Handicap, in which he may have an excellent chance of repeating his surprise victory of two years ago, especially if the going is soft. Konnetai The two-year-old Konneta appears to have made a good .recovery from her recent leg ailment and is back on the tracks at Ellerslie. Providing she goes on the right way, Konneta should be fit to race at Easter, when one of her engagements will be the Great Northern Champagne Stakes. For the Stud. The brilliant mare Stretto is to be retired to the stud at the end of the season, and will be mated with the Karamu horse Bulandshar, to whom she has been booked for 1939 and 1940. Stretto’s dam, The Begum, is at pressent in foal to Bulandshar, and has also been booked again to the same sire for the 1939 and 1940 seasons. One More Wanted. Victories for Ajax are now not news; the public knows that the champion Victorian will win and the only matter of interest in him is the fact that he has with 18 wins, drawn closer and closer to the record of 19 successive wins to the credit of Desert Gold and Gloaming. There is nothing in Australia that can even threaten Ajax from seven furlongs to a mile and a half —apart from Defaulter!

Well Bred Mare,

Dawn Star, winner of the maiden event on the opening day at New Plymouth, is a five-year-old chestnut mare by Lord Warden from Gold Dawn, who is a sister to the consistent performer Bright Glow. Dawn Star showed much promise when tried three seasons ago, but went wrong. She was paraded last Thursday with an ugly knee, and was above herself ’in condition, but she led practically all the way. On Saturday, under handicap conditions, she was the first horse beaten.

Another Siegfried Winner. One of the most improved horses to graduate from the maiden ranks lately is Fiancee (Siegfried—Betroth), who carries the colours of Mr H. E. Card, of Wanganui, at one time owner of The Banker. She has built up a good deal and her improvement in physique induced many to support her in the novice handicap at New Plymouth on Saturday. The’class she had to deal with was not strong, but she disposed of them with the greatest of ease; in fact, her rider treated the opposition as thought the filly had no chance of being beaten. His view was correct, for, after waiting till inside the last furlong, she walked past them and won with ease. Fiancee is bred to be something more than a sprinter and her performance at Taranaki suggested that she would run a good seven furlongs or a mile. Past and Present. Carbine won the Sydney Cup as a tnree-year-old under 9.0 and Defaulter has been allotted 8.12 in this year’s race. Some will hold the opinion that Defaulter is consequently almost on a par with Carbine, but there never has and never will be a measure to mark the merit of form today and that of about half a century ago. The conditions of racing have totally changed and those who compare the very remote past with the present are merely ploughing sand.

Peony Rose. With two mile and a-quarter races to her credit this season, Peony Rose is one of the most-discussed horses engaged in the Riverton Cup this season. She has been working brilliantly at Riverton since winning at Gore .last month. After a Long Spell. Shillalegh Wood, who has not appeared in public since the Grand National meeting of 1937, when she finished second in the big race to Nocturnus, has been nominated for the Birchwood and Riverton meetings. RACES ATjrRENTHAM TAURANGA WINS THOMPSON. ST. LEG ER TO BEAUPARTIR. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Very keen racing featured the opening of the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting at. Trentham yesterday. The principal handicap. the Thompson, was won very narrowly in an exciting finish by the three-year-old filly Tauranga, who is the first of her age and sex to win this important mile event since Golden Hair in 1934. The feature of this finish was that the winner and runner-up, Laughing Lass, are owned by brothers, Messrs W. McA. and T. A. Duncan. Beaupartir duly fulfilled expectations in the St. Leger, which was not run at a fast pace. Coronation made most of the running, but a mile from home was joined by Old Bill, Beaupartir always being handy in behind and running without pulling and won easily. The totalisator handled £49,191, as compared with £41,602 on the same day fast year. Results: —

RACING FIXTURES March 23, 25.—Oamaru J.C. March 24, 25. —Manawatu R.C. March 25. —Birchwood H.C. March 25, 27—Bay of Plenty R.C. Existing regulations are quite inadequate for the control of motor cyclicts. is the opinion of officers of the Waimairi County Council. The council, along with others throughout New Zealand, has been asked by the Transport Department for its opinion on the control of motor cyclists. The matter was referred to the county clerk (Mr G. S. Cowper) and the county' inspector (Mr G. E. Stokes). Mr Cowper said that the irresponsible youth would always give a certain amount of trouble but this could not be said to apply particularly to the use of motor cycles. To impose greater restrictions on the use of motor-cycles, say, by increasing the age limit for licences oi’ reducing the speed limit, would be unfair to the big majority of cyclists, who were prepared to obey the regulations. The report observed that there had no doubt been an improvement in the last year or two in the standard of motor driving, with both motor-cars and motor-cycles,
