NEWMAN SCHOOL PICNIC. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Newman school children, parents and visitors were favoured with splendid weather for the annual school picnic on Wednesday. The Newman Domain presented a happy scene with its large assemblage. Bathing and swimming was indulged in and a number of races decided. A heavyweight ladies’ swing event caused much amusement, the winner being Mrs J. E. Monaghan. The adult events resulted as follow: Married Ladies’ Race: Mrs Rankin 1, Mrs Goss 2. Married Men’s Race: Bengston 1, Reid 2. Single Ladies’ Race: Miss M. Payne I. Miss A. Smith 2. Single Men’s Race: R. Winter 1, E. Norris 2. Cake competition: Mrs M. Dillon; sheep guessing, Mr Colin Goss. Nail Driving: Ladies’, Mrs Sigvertsen and Mrs Monaghan; men, P. Monaghan and L. Sigvertsen. Chain Stepping: Ladies, Mrs R. Cooper and Miss N. Jaspers; men, Mr J. Hudson and A. Goss. Personal. Mr E. H. W. Kenny was accorded a farewell by the members of the Eketahuna Club, there being a "large attendance. During the evening, Mr O. Walton (president) made eulogistic reference to the splendid service Mr Kenny had given the district and asked him to accept a Loewe pipe and tobacco pouch as a tangible expression of their goodwill, and asked him to convey to Mrs Kenny the good wishes of members. Mr. Kenny suitably replied. A “Chinaman” tournament was won by Messrs A. E. Brittain and C. Welch with Messrs W. Simpson and A. D. Murray runners-up. Mr Jack Payne will leave for Hawera shortly, having accepted a position in that town. A Birthday Party. The Mangaone branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held a most successful birthday party last week, among those present being visitors from Carterton, Wellington, and Takapau. The card tournament resulted: Ladies, Mrs Jack Reid 1, Mrs W. Evans 2; men, L. Eagle 1, A. I Judd 2. Mrs W. Evans won the lucky parcel game and Misses I. Spring and K. Perry won the Lucky Spot waltz. Mrs F. B. Lowes expressed her thanks to those in attendance for having assisted to make the function such a success. She also thanked Miss Thompson for making and icing the birthday cake. Mrs Lowes then lit the candles and called on Mrs Edwards, a past vice-president, to blow them out. For the dancing music was supplied by Mrs Payne (Palmerston North), Mr A. Wake playing an extra. Mr I. Fulton carried out the duties of M.C. Eketahuna Stock Sale. I At the Eketahuna stock sale yesterday ther was limited competition for breeding ewes and practically no demand for sheep lacking condition. Lambs were disposed of at rates on a par with those ruling lately. School Sports. The Bush Primary School Sports Association will hold its annual sports meeting on the Mangatainoka Domain tomorrow, commencing at 10.30 a.m. Nineteen schools will compete. BUSH HERD TESTING.
