EMPIRE DEFENCE
POSITION OF DOMINIONS LORD STRABOLGI CRITICISES MR CHAMBERLAIN. UNFORTUNATE PHRASEOLOGY. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. LONDON March 16. Referring to his recent visit to New Zealand and Australia, Lord Strabolgi said in the House of Lords today that he found that a deplorable effect had been produced by Mr Chamberlain’s speech last year, in which he said that the Government’s tasks in defence were home territory, trade routes, and any overseas territories which might be attacked. This had been misunderstood, being regarded as chronological. Lord Strabolgi said that the Dominions thought that they would be the last to be supported in case of attack. “Our anxiety during the Great War was to induce our enemies to go to sea. I suggested to my- friends in New Zealand and Australia that there would be great joy in Whitehall if it was heard that a hostile squadron was bound for the South Pacific, for that is just what we want.” The mischief arose, said Lord Strabolgi, from Mr Chamberlain’s unfortunate phraseology, and the matter should be put right as soon as possible.
