MR HUME FAREWELLED

GATHERING AT COMMERCIAL BANK. WELCOME TO NEW MANAGER. A pleasant gathering took place at the Commercial Bank of Australia, Ltd., on Wednesday afternoon, when some of the clients of the bank met to farewell the manager, Mr. B. T. D. Hume and to welcome his successor, Mr S. V. Playsted. On behalf of those assembled, Mr H. A. R. Dunderdale expressed the regret of Mr Hume’s numerous friends at his departure and congratulated him on his promotion. The hope was expressed that his future career with the bank would prove highly successful. Mr. Dunderdale asked Mr Hume to accept a chiming clock suitably engraved, as a memento of his five years’ association with Masterton clients.

Messrs E. G. Norman, W. V. Madden, J. Bradbury and several others endorsed these remarks.

In reply, Mr Hume expressed his regret at having to sever his connection with so many friends in Masterton and said he looked forward to meeting them again if the opportunity offered of passing through the Wairarapa. He sincerely thanked those present for their kindly remarks and for the presentation made to him and said that he would always retain very happy memories of his sojourn in Masterton. In introducing the new manager. Mr Playsted. Mr Hume assured him that he could look forward with pleasure to his stay in Masterton, as he felt sure that the same loyal support and cooperation would be forthcoming in the future as in the past. Mr. Playsted said he was very pleased to come to New Zealand, as the country and the people reminded him particularly of Tasmania, the place of his birth. He was delighted with the parts of New Zealand which he had seen and with the kindness shown to him. since his arrival. The climateappealed greatlv to him. as at the last two places in Australia at which he had occupied the position of branch manager he had found the weather at times insufferably hot.
