WRESTLING
WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES.
SUCCESSFUL AMATEUR SEASON.
The annual report of the Wairarapa Wrestling Association for the 1938 season states: —"From the point of view of professional matches the 1938 season cannot be looked on as a success, but it is gratifying to know that the amateur side of the game in the Wairarapa is progressing satisfactorily, the clubs in the different centres all reporting a good season. As a means to physical fitness there is no exercise so calculated to build up as amateur wrestling. Under a coach who will see that each boy trains to suit his physical capacity, parents need have no fear in allowing their boys, especially those of a weak constitution, to join up with the local club. Each member receives individual attention and is not allowed to overdo the exercises while gradually building a sound constitution.
"The Wairarapa amateur championships resulted as follow —Bantam, 8.11, W. Chaselands (Featherston); feather, 9.8, A. Nielsen (Eketahuna); lightweight, 10.5, G. Wenden (Featherston): welter, 11.4, Roy Sutherland (Masterton): middle. 12.6, I. Sutherland (Masterton); light-heavy, 13.9, H. Hill (Masterton); heavy, over 13.9, J. H. Dryden (Featherston).
“Nielsen,' Wendon, Hill and Dryden represented the Wairarapa at the Wellington Provincial championships. Hill of Masterton, was runner-up in the light-heavy and Dryden gained the heavy class. At the subsequent New Zealand championships Dryden was again successful.
“The amateur clubs have commenced training for this season and will welcome recruits.”
The annual general meeting of the Wairarapa Wrestling Association (inc.) will be held in the A. and P. Rooms. Perry Street, on Thursday,/March 23, at 8 p.m.
