WEST SCHOOL
FATE OF BUILDING NOT YET KNOWN. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. No advice as to whether the West School building is to be repaired or demolished has yet been received by the committee, which held its monthly meeting last night. The chairman, Mr F. Shearer, presided. The headmaster, Mr Rust, reported that, the pupils attending the main school had been transferred to Wairarapa College, where temporary accommodation was being provided. He reported the roll number to be 344. showing no change in numbers during the month. Garden competitions had been arranged at the school and both boys and girls were taking a keen interest. in the contests. Mr Rust suggested that the committee should keep in mind the possibility of being able to secure. a . special room for visual education purposes, as the system was apparently coming into favour at the present time. He also suggested that on the occasion of the Centennial Exhibition the committee should secure the use of railway carriages for the convenience of parties of children visiting the exhibition, as the Railways Department intended fitting up a number of carriages so that the children could sleep in them, thus allowing them to spend two or three days in Wellington.. The resignation of the secretary, Mr W. V. Madden, was accepted with regret. Several members paid a tribute to the excellent services rendered by Mr Madden during his term of office. Mr W. A. Clarke, a member of the committee tendered his resignation, which was accepted, and he was appointed secretary in place of Mr Madden. : ' '
The Wellington Education Board advised that it had issued authority for certain temporary repairs to be affected to the asphalt .areas. The board also wrote requesting further details regarding an application for a library subsidy. The committee’s balance sheet for the year was'returned audited and accounts totalling £4O 3s were passed. SCHOOL CARNIVAL; It was reported that the arrangements for the carnival to be held at the Cole Street school on Saturday, March 25, were well under way. The ladies’ committee, presided over byMrs F. Shearer, reported a good response to the request for produce and other articles for the stalls. It was decided that Mr J. Robertson. M.P., be invited to open the carnival and that invitations to attend the gathering be sent to members of the Wellington Education Board, the Principal of Wairarapa College and the headmasters of other Masterton schools.
