PRIDE HUMBLED
DEBATE IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS CRITICISM OF PREMIER’S STATEMENT. CALL FOR CO-OPERATIVE PEACE EFFORT. (British Official Wireless. < (Received This Day. 11.33 p.m.) RUGBY, March 15. MT D. R. Grenfell (.Labour) opening the debate in the House of Commons on the situation in Central Europe, commented with amazement on what he called the sense of splendid isolation and detachment of Mr Chamberlain’s statement on a situation charged with emotion —pride has been humbled and a nation’s trust and independence violated. He charged the Government with failure to cope with the situation before Munich and asked the Government to seek, before it was too late, to assemble for a co-operative effort the peace-loving forces of Europe and of the world. Sir A. Sinclair (Liberal Leader) also appealed to Mr Chamberlain to gather like-minded nations, under British leadership, in defence of the principles of law in international relations. Mr Anthony Eden said no one could doubt that there would be only a brief respite before further demands were made by Germany and another victim arraigned.
