STARS OF 1939

ANNUAL GAME OF PICKING.

Hollywood has begun its annual game of picking the new stars of 1939 from the newcomers and supporting players of 1938. Hottest local nominations are (Men) Richard Greene, John Garfield, Jeffrey Lynn, John Payne, Richard Carlson; (women), Nancy Kelly, Ellen Drew. Louise Campbell, Frances Mercer, Lana Turner, Lucille Ball, Anne Sheridan. Marjorie Weaver, Lynn Bari, and Lynne Carver. Greene has made five films since he went to Hollywood from Birmingham in January, 1938. Garfield and Lynn make their debut together in “Four Daughters.” Payne was introduced recently in “Garden of the Moon,” and Carlson gets his first big part in "The Young in Heart.” Of the women, Nancy Kelly is yet to be seen here. Ellen Drew and Louise Campbell made promising debuts in “If I Were King” and “Men With Wings” respectively. Frances Mercer had that sparring match with Rogers in “Vivacious Lady.” Lana Turner was the pretty little blonde who was murdered in “They Won’t Forget.” and has since joined the Judge Hardy series. Lucille Ball was the tall, sulky-look-ing brunette in "Stage Door,” who afterwards played in “Room Service” and “Having a Wonderful Time.” _ Marjorie Weaver burst on us with an infectious smile in “Second Honeymoon.”
