Protecting Reserves.
A decision to convene a further meeting with the object of setting up a representative committee to act in an advisory capacity upon questions affecting the preservation of scenic reserves in the Rotorua District was reached at a public meeting held at the instance of the Rotorua County Council and attended By representatives of Government departments and 1 local bodies. The meeting was presided over by Mr H. P. Ford, chairman of the Rotorua County Council, and was addressed, among others, by Mr K. M. Graham, Commissioner of Crown Lands, Auckland, and Mr M. J. Galvin, Inspector of Reserves, North Island. The opinion was unanimously expressed that steps must be taken to check the retreat of forests in the Rotorua district, the value of these to a scenic district being particularly stressed.
Revolutionising Rugby. Whether the long pass-out from the scrum will be beneficial or otherwise to Rugby football in the province, will be one of the questions to be discussed at the annual meeting of the Otago Rugby Union on March 29. On his return to New Zealand last year Mr N. A. Mitchell, captain of the All Black team which toured Australia, forwarded to the New Zealand Union a suggestion that in view of the long pass from the scrum having proved such a success in Australia, the possibility of its further development in the Dominion might well be considered. Mr Mitchell’s suggestion was referred to the various constituent unions, and the Otago Union, at a meeting held last year, passed it on to the affiliated club with a recommendation that the delegates might consider it and bring forward their ideas on it at the annual meeting.
