WINTER SPORTS

DEVELOPMENT IN FRANCE.

WORLD’S HIGHEST CABLE HOIST. The phenomenal development of winter sports in France has had as one result the construction of numerous cable hoists, enabling ski-ers to reach considerable heights in a few minutes. Among the new cable hoists whose construction will be begun this year is one at the Aiguille du Midi. This will be the highest in the world, going from the Aiguille du Midi to the Col du Midi, reaching an altitude of 11,800 feet,, and will make ski-ing in August possible.

The present cable hoist of the Aiguille du Midi, well known to mountaineers who have made the ascent cf Mont Blanc, reaches the Station des Glaciers. 8.037 feet altitude. When it is continued to the Col du Midi it will provide access to the immense Vallee Blanche.

The most interesting fact about the new cable hoist is that it will make ski-ers independent of a special season, for in the Vallee Blanche they will be able to indulge in their favourite sport even in the month of August. During the winter months it will become possible. thanks to the new cable hoist, to ski on a run of no less than 11 miles in length and a difference in level of 8.200 feet.
