BRITISH BATTLESHIP
MAY GO TO AUSTRALIA CONVEYING DUKE AND DUCHESS OF KENT. AN UNCONFIRMED REPORT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright SYDNEY, March 12. Though there is no official information on the subject from London, there is a strong belief among Federal Ministers that arrangements will be made for the Duke and Duchess of Kent to travel to Australia in a British battleship when they come here in November. It would cause no surprise if H.M.S. Repulse, which is being specially fitted to carry the King and Queen to North America in the middle of the year, werd used afterwards to bring the Duke and Duchess to Australia. It is recognised that it would be difficult to make binding arrangements at this stage. To detach a capital ship from the Royal Navy would depend largely on the international situation later this year. There would be moral and strategical advantages in sending a battleship tq Australia, apart from its aporopriateness to the arrival of the Duke of Kent as Governor-General.
It is even suggested that if a battleship were used for this purpose it might be detained in Australian waters for several months.
