RAINIER A SPEEDY HACK.

(By

“The Cynic.”)

One of the speediest hacks seen out in the Auckland province of recent years is Rainier, and, but for a tendency to run about in his races, he would have been out of the hack class by this time. Now a four-year-old, he has not raced for nearly eighteen months, but he is due to make his reappearance at Paeroa next week. Fit Horse. The two-year-old Orelio, who was successful in the early spring and won at Avondale after beating all but Anopheles in the Avondale Stakes, is getting through good work at Takanini, and he should be a fit horse by the time the Auckland Easter Meeting is held a month hence. He is a more than useful galloper, .even if he has not reached the high standard anticipated. Good Looking. One of the best-looking two-year-olds in the north is Glen Connell, and he has gone well in the half-dozen races he has contested. He will have chances at Paeroa, Ellerslie, Avondale, and Whangarei of opening his winning account. Turn of Speed, If Heroic Maid is produced either day at Paeroa she will be able to exploit her great turn of speed to advantage, for this course is eminently in favour of horses with early pace, despite a home stretch of a furlong and a half. She is one of the fastest youngsters in the north, and next season she ought to be in the first flight of sprinters. Promising Youngster. One of the promising youngsters seen out in the early spring was Mel- ' iora, who finished second to Orelio when he won a handicap at Avondale last September. She has not raced in the interim, for, as she was growing rapidly, her trainer, A. Cook, decided to rest her, and so give her every opportunity to develop. She figures in the entries for the Ohinemuri Meeting, and is to race on one occasion prior to being produced at Ellerslie. She is a very promising galloper by Bambury from Teels, a daughter of Lord Queex and Lovematch, dam of the Auckland Cup winner Motere. TARANAKI MEETING CONCLUSION IN SHOWERY WEATHER. AUSTRALIAN RACING ANOTHER WIN FOR AJAX. EIGHTEENTH IN SUCCESSION. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. MELBOURNE, March 11. The Windbag colt Pageant scored his most important win to date in the Australian Cup on the final day of the V.R.C. meeting at Flemington' today. Pageant was a long way back early, but his superior stamina, combined with light weight (7.8) proved a big factor. His win enabled bookmakers to escape heavy liabilities over the double with El Golea. Dark David surprised by his good race for second place. He battled gamely, as did Ortelle’s Star. Bourbon was a long way out early, but finished well, suggesting possibilities for the Sydney Cup. Spear Chief weakened. Grecian Princess was the disappointment of the race. The topweight, Manolive, led early by ten lengths from Young Crusader, who was 15 lengths ahead of Dolphin. Then came Dignitary, Spear Chief, Mac o Roni, Grecian Princess, Red Sails and Pageant. Pageant improved his position at the beginning of the last mile, where the leaders began to tire. Several horses had good chances at the straight entrance. Pageant finished strongly to win by three-quarters of a length, with the same distance between second and third horses. Then came Bourbon, Kingdom and Spear Chief, with Grecian Princess last. Manolive broke down. A sensation occurred at the start of the C. M. Lloyd Stakes, when Ajax’s opponent lost considerable ground. The champion merrily cantered ovei’ the course to record rhis eighteenth successive win. His record now reads 25 wins and three seconds in 29 starts for £28,075 in stakes. Ajax is now in thirteenth place among great stake winners. The New Zealand bred Amiable was always prominent to defeat the consistent Tetreen in the Leonard Stakes. Red Morn, on the outside rail, ran a good third. Wilson, also New Zealand-bred, put up an exceptional effort in the Carmichael Stakes to win after being last at the home turn. Wilson,’ who is a stablemate of Ajax, has now three wins in his'last four starts. Hiawatha ran a game race, as did Lord Walla. Another New Zealand-bred winner, Crojick, figured in an exciting finish in the Farewell Handicap. Crojick showed a return to his best form, and in a strong finish beat Baryta. The Trump finished fast. National knocked up. A protest was dismissed. ‘ Deckard, after being always prominent, won the Autumn Steeplechase, showing improvement on last week’s form. Gaskill and Royal Fire ran good races. The winner was ridden by the former New Zealander, A. Driscoll. The weather was warm, and there was a good attendance at the meeting.
