Bitter disappointment was felt by the thousands of cricket followers in Wellington who had been looking forward to the match for weeks past when rain on Saturday again prevented a sfart being made with the game between Sir Julien Cahn”s team .and the New Zealand eleven at the Basin Reserve.
_ The captains, D. A. R. Moloney (New Zealand) and G. F. H. Hearne inspected the wicket at 2 o’clock, and agreed to call off play for the day. NEW ZEALAND AT WICKETS. SOME VIGOROUS BATTING. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Wellington today turned on beautful weather for the match. The crowd arrived in fairly large numbers this morning. The wicket rolled out beautifully and the outfield is fairly fast. ■ Whitelaw and Ongley opened for New Zealand, the former facing the fast-medium bowler Phillipson from, the northern end for the first over, which was a maiden, Whitelaw being content to let the majority of the deliveries pass. Watts took up the attack at the southern end and Ongley soon opened his account with a single. Whitelaw scored a brace past square leg with the next ball. The first boundary of the match was scored by Ongley off a short ball from Phillipson. The ball rattled on the square leg pickets. Ten was then on the board.
In the next over, the batsmen continued to bat vigorously, scoring well off both bowlers. Walsh replaced PhilJipson but singles came steadily. Forty was on lhe board after thirty-five minutes play, and Ongley reached thirty by hooking Watts to the square leg fence. He repeated the performance with the next, ball. Whitelaw’s play up to this stage was characterised by delightful placemen Is. Fifty came up in forty-one minutes, but seven runs later Ongley was bowled by Walsh. 57/1 /35.' ~
