CARNIVAL WEEK
BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY AND Y.M.C.A. APPEAL TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT TOMORROW. DANCE AND CABARET LATER IN WEEK. There will be a full range of attractions this week for the joint carnival being promoted by the Masterton Beautifying Society and the Y.M.C.A., which will conclude on Saturday afternoon and evening with a big gathering in the Park. The Debutantes’ Revue, which scored such an outstanding success in the Opera House on Saturday night, will be repeated tonight, tomorrow and on Wednesday. Considerable interest is being taken in the inter-house table tennis tournament, which is to be held tomorrow night in the Y.M.C.A. halls. Keen rivalry will be evident between the various teams, which will consist' of two ladies and two men each. Special arrangements have been made to cater for all classes of players and twelve tables will be available for play. The contest will be a knock-out one and both singles and doubles will be decided. Members of the winning team will be presented with individual trophies. Altogether, 24 teams have entered in the contest, so that there will be an excellent representation of the various business houses. A collection will be taken up among the spectators for the carnival funds.
A dance to be held in the Municipal Hall on Thursday will be another popular attraction. Dress or flannels will be optional. A cabaret will be held in the Municipal Hall on Friday. Jack Mackay’s Novelty Orchestra has been engaged for the occasion. Saturday will see the culmination of the week’s effort with a big carnival gathering in the Park. Starting at 1.30 p.m., there will be spectacular displays of marching, etc., by the massed school children, the inter-house girls’ teams, and Scouts, besides athletic events. In the evening, starting at 7 o’clock, the Y.M.C.A. gymnastic squad will give a display of trapeze and Roman ring work and there will also be a fireworks display. At both sessions there will be a wide range of goods on sale at the many stalls, while patrons will find plenty of amusement at the various sideshows, of which there will be a large number. Badges will be on sale at Is each on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday of this week. .
BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY. SUMMARY OF WORK FOR TOWN. The Beautifying Society has an excellent record of achievement standing to its credit. Since its formation the Society has spent £4803 on town improvements, including £1632 in planting trees in streets, £227 on seats. £627 on South Park, £lOO on the ColeEssex Street crossing. £386 on Wainoua River planting, £llB on the Allan Memorial Bridge and £1344 in Masterton Park. Its future activities include further improvements to the Railway Station, splaying back of street corners, Waipoua River planting scheme as a centennial memorial and an ornamental lake and coloured electric fountain in the old Waipoua River bed.
