WELCOME RAIN

TOTAL FALL IN MASTERTON. WELL OVER HALF AN INCH. The total rainfall recorded in Masterton since Thursday, when wet weather set in, is 61 points, which is well over half an inch. Although the fall was not very great, the conditions of the past few days have allowed the maximum benefit to be derived from it, as the cool, overcast weather and the light nature of the rain allowed the moisture to penetrate the soil. Under such circumstances, the . rain has brought a measure of relief to the parched pastures, though more rain is still needed to give any lasting benefits. Reports from other parts of the Wellington and the Hawke’s Bay districts indicate that rain has been warmly welcomed by farmers and others in these areas. Tanks have been replenished and crops and pastures freshened considerably.
