FIRE BRIGADES
DEMONSTRATIONS AT WANGANUI.
CARTERTON TEAM LEADING. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, March 10. Good progress was maintained today with the biennial fire-fighting demonstrations of the United Fire Brigades’ Association at Cook’s Gardens. Four events ’were completed on Wednesday, and three today, a start being made with the seventh heat this afternoon. Carterton so far has enjoyed the most success in the competitions, with two firsts, two seconds, and a third. Petone, who won the biggest, share of the prize money at the previous demonstrations in Nelson two years ago, has also done well, and fills second place with, one first, two seconds, and a third. Hokitika and Dannevirke have also secured first prizes. Carterton at present is leading in the championship competition, and the two shield events. Today’s results are: — Four men motor event (free-for-all); Petone, 51 secs., 1; Carterton, 48 2-ssecs., 2: Hokitika, 52 4-ssecs„ 3; Dannevirke, 54secs„ 4; Taumartinui, 55 3-ssecs., 5; Te Awamutu, 61 2-sse.es., 6. CONCLUSION IN RAIN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, This Day. The concluding fire brigades demonstrations were held in rain, before a very small attendance. The four men motor pump from standpipe event resulted:— Hastings, 67secs„ 1; Stratford, 71 3-ssecs., 2; Carterton, 72 1-5 secs., 3; Upper Hult, 73 2-ssecs„ 4; Hokitika. 74secs., 5; Dannevirke. 74 4-5 The four men motor event, showing two waters for the Mereweather Shield resulted: —Carterton, 36 2-ssecs, 1; Petone, 37secs, 2; Upper Hutt, 40 4-5 secs, 3; Lyttelton, 43 2-ssecs, 4; Hastings. 43 4-ssecs, 5; Hawera, 44secs, 6.
