NO PLAY IN WELLINGTON YESTERDAY MATCH AGAINST NEW ZEALAND ELEVEN. RAIN PREVENTS A START. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Rain prevented play in the cricket match between Sir Julien Cahn’s team and the New Zealand eleven at the Basin Reserve, Wellington, yesterday. The wipd changed from south to northyesterday morning, and brought frequent drizzling showers. After several inspections it was decided to make a start at 2.15 p.m. if no further rain fell. The gates were opened and a few hundred people filed on to the ground, but they were fated to see no play, as a heavy shower fell about 2.10 and increased to a downpour about 3.15. At 4 o’clock play was called off for the day. Moloney won the toss and at once decided to bat, and, to the surprise of many, the names of P. E. Whitelaw (Auckland) and J. A. Ongley (Wellington) were hoisted on the scoreboard •as opening batsmen, it being generally thought that E. W. Tindill (Wellington) would open the innings with Whitelaw. Play will stqrt at 11.30 a.m. today if the weather permits. RAIN CONTINUES. SOME SIGNS OF CLEARING. WELLINGTON, This Day. There are signs of the weather clearing from the south. It ;s still overcast with a light drift of rain. The wicket was inspected at 11.30 a.m. and a decision was made to inspect it again at 2 p.m. _____________
