CARTERTON RACES
ANNUAL MEETING TODAY ■ RAIN BENEFITS TRACK. GALTEEMORE WINS THE CUP. (By “The Cynic.”) The annual meeting of the Carterton Racing Club was held today in dull, overcast weather. As the result of rain overnight, the sting was out of the track, and the horses appreciated the good going by returning fast times. In spite of the threatening weather, there was a large attendance, and keen and interesting racing was the order of the day. Results up to the time of going to press were as follow: — MAIDEN PLATE, of £3O; f. 2, Messrs E. Gething and J. H. Brown’s ch f Titter (Laughing Prince —Sigina), 3yrs, 8.12 (W. Doyle) 1 5, Mr H. B. Lorigan’s br c Sothic (Doric—Sister Vamp), 3yrs. 8.5 (W. Jenkins) 2 1, Mr W. J. Wood’s ch g Barabbas (Rabbi—Alpine Camp), 3yrs, 8.12 (A. Jenkins) 3 Also started: 3 Dissipation, 8.12 (G. Tatiersall); 6 Ugly Duckling, 8.12 (F. Power); 4 Equity, 8.5 (P. Burgess). Won by two lengths, a neck between second and third. Equity was fourth. Time, Irnin 16 3-ssecs.‘ Equity and Gothic made all the early running in the Maiden Plate and rounding the half-mile they had charge from Titter, Barabbas and Dissipation. The order was the same into the straight, when Titter, on the outside, came with a rattle to mow down the leaders and win by two lengths from Gothic, who was only a neck in front of Barabbas. Then came Equity. It was the winner’s fourteenth start but only her third in the colours of her new owners. She was definitely unlucky, at Woodville and may no.w go on to* better things. CARRINGTON HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP, of £100; lm and 80yds. 2, Mr G. T. Spear’s br g Silver River (Royden—Starmist), syrs, 10.8 (W. Pine) 1 1, Messrs T. Fisher and T. R. George's b g Lustral (TidalAsterism), syrs, 9.9 (P. Burgess) 2 4, Mr J. A. Robertson’s b g Happy Heels (Lackham —Clesanta), 4 yrs, 9.0 (A. Fagar) 3 Also started: 5 Cricket, 10.13 (I. Rohloff); 6 Otaki, 9.4 (J. McCauley); 3 Great Quex, 9.0 (A. Jenkins). Won by one length, half a head between second and third. Cricket was fourth. Time, lmin 48sec'. Silver River scored an end-to-end win in the Carrington Highweight Handicap. The Trentharn trained gelding assumed command once the field settled down arid showed the way round the back from Great Quex, Happy Heels, Lustral and Otaki. The field bunched rounding the home turn but Silver River stayed on remarkably well to win by a length from the first favourite, Lustral. Happy Heels, 'always placed nicely, was half a head away third. From the Press stand Happy Heels looked a certain second and Lustral, who faded at the death, a moderate fourth. -. WAIRARAPA COUNTY CUP, of £l5O, I.lm. 2 Mr J. O’Brien’s br h Galteemore (Matarma —Lady Colossus), 7.2 _ (Bennett) 1 1 Mr F. Kettlewell’s b g Siegmund (Siegfried —Lillimond), 9.0 (Tattersail) 2 4 Mr J. W. Lowe’s b g Good Sun (Australian Sun —Bonun), 7.2 (Hutchens) 3 Also started: 3 Helen Ford, 7.9 (Cameron). The Wairarapa County Cup was more of a procession than a race. Galteemore cleared out from the barrier rise and led Siegmund and Good Sun all the way to win by five lengths. Siegmund, who finished second, three lengths ahead of Good Sun, was not suited by the turning course. Galteemore won a double at Taratahi two years ago.
