FRENCH MONUMENT
ERECTED TO CHRYSANTHEMUM.
At Toulouse, a monument has been erected to the chrysanthemum, and to Captain Pierre Bernet, native of the famous old capital of Provence.
Captain Bernet, born in Toulouse in 1776. took part in the Napoleonic wars, winning the cross of the Legion of Honour.
When the wars had died down he became an horticulturist, first as- an amateur, later as a professional. He began experimenting with chrysanthemum seeds and finally developed a flower that combined the qualities, of beauty with adaptability, to the soil of the Toulouse region. Toulouse is a city of flowers, for another is the flower of Toulouse, the violet, which is exported to all parts of Europe, and its cultivation is one of the leading industries of the city. The flower has its place of honour in the town hall, where it forms an important part of magnificent mural decorations. There are many monuments in Toulouse, one of them a column recalling the last battle of the Peninsular War, fought between Marshal Soult and the Duke of Wellington, April 10, 1814. ,
