All sections in the Chamber cheered a reference by the Foreign Minister, M. Markovitch, to British ( efforts in the cause of appeasement, which he hoped would be crowned with success in the future as in the past. The maintenance of peace, he said, was the first business of the Great Powers, but feverish armament was an obstacle to serene optimism.
