The loss of Chungsiang paved the way for the Japanese advance to Ichang, threatening the isolation of the Chinese over a wide area. Many towns are reported to have been set on fire, including Sanyangtien, which was razed. Incessant heavy fighting occurred in the Tienmen sector, where Japanese reinforcements prevented a Chinese break-through. The Chinese are continuing their drive south of the Yangtze, and are within five miles of Yoyang. HOSPITAL BOMBED UNION JACK FLYING OVER BUILDING. OPERATING THEATRE DESTROYED SHANGHAI, March 9. While Union Jacks were flying over the building, Japanese warplanes bombed an English Baptist mission and the Jenkin Robertson Hospital at Sianfu, destroying the operating theatre, the X-ray department and two wards. A Chinese nurse was killed.
