ALPINE MAROONS
PARTY OF SWISS TROOPS IN PERIL IN INCREASING DANGER FROM AVALANCHES. NO HOPE OF ESCAPE 'TILL GALE ABATES. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright. (Received This-Day, 10.10 a.m.) BERNE, March 9. Seventy-six Swiss soldiers, who are short of fuel, are snowed up in Wildhornut, in the Bernese Alps, at an altitude of 7600 feet. The commanding major has telephoned, that they still have some food. A heavy gale is blowing and snow is falling, increasing the danger of avalanches hourly. “It is impossible to send relief and it is impossible for us to attempt to descend while the gale continues,” the message states. A column engulfed by an avalanche on March 8 was taking supplies, but failed to reach the marooned troops.
