MAGISTRATE’S COURT
FORTNIGHTLY MASTERTON SITTING. JUDGMENT IN CIVIL CASES. • Judgment for plaintiff by default was given by Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., in 1 the following undefended civil claims in the Masterton Magistrate’s Court yesterday:— Sydney Lee v. Cyril Henry Thomas, claim 9s 4d, costs 12s; Fagan Motors. Ltd., v. C. Jensen, claim £5 16s, costs £1 12s 6d; A. Rolph v. S. Newland, claim £2 2s, costs 6s; Masterton Borough Council v. Henry Jones and Thomas Bassett, claim £8 15s Id, costs £1 15s 6d; F. A. Taylor v. A. R. Popple claim £1 19s 2d, costs Bs. Judgment summonses: C. Tyack was ordered to pay Auto Parts. Ltd., the sum of £9 4s forthwith, in default nine days’ imprisonment, warrant to be suspended as long as defendant pays £1 a month. J. Brooks was ordered to pay the Wairarapa Electric Power Board the sum of £8 16s 2d forthwith, in default eight days’ imprisonment.
A gain of 16.335 was made in the population of the Dominion in 1938. the total being 1.618,093 on December 31 last, according to the Abstract of Statistics. There were ■ then 821.433 males and 796,660 females. The number of Maoris was 87.947. Births increased from 26,014 in 1937 to 27,253, the number per 100 of population being 17.94. representing an increase of 0.65. Deaths rose from 13.658 to 14.756. The figures indicate a substantial rise in infant mortality, deaths of infants under one year registered during 1938 being 970. as against 812 in 1937. The registrations during 1938 correspond to a rate of 35.59 per 1000 live births, this figure being higher than annual rate recorded since 1928. The figures relating to births and deaths do not apply to Maoris.
