AN EXCELLENT RESPONSE.

TT is now clear that the Masterton branch of the Plunket X Society was happily inspired when it decided this year to make a direct appeal to the public .for the funds needed to enable it to carry on its important and valuable work of promoting the health of mothers and nd aids. In the house to bouse canvass conducted by members of the branch committee and a number of helpers a substantially larger sum has been raised than was obtained on other occasions by means or elaborately organised shop clays and the sale of badges, lhe result disclosed is gratifying and-is creditable io donors and collectors alike.

Direct living probably is the best of all methods of supporting a worthy cause and it may be that the Masterton branch of the Plunket Society will be able to depend henceforth upon the fund-raising method that has proved so satisfactory this year. The appeal for contributions, which are accepted gratefully though thev be small in amount, serves other purposes than that of gathering in necessary funds. Personal contact between the collectors and members of the public helps to make the. work and aims of the society better known. The collectors have pleasant stories to tell of the spirit of appreciation m which they were met by some of those they approached. \\ heie a less friendly reception is encountered, however, the Plunket (Society is in a position to court inquiry. It will be supported more and more readily and liberally in the extent to which the nature of the work it is doing becomes known and understood.

In its latest appeal the Masterton branch has not only gathered in donations to a satisfactory amount but. has eni oiled a fair number of new'members. In this mailer, however, there is still plenty of room for further progress. The branch, ought. 1o be able at least to double its present membership without going outside the ranks of those who may reasonably be expected to regard it as a privilege and a duty to gite the Plunket Society their support.
