WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
BUSINESS AT ANNUAL MEETING. ("Times-Age" Special.) The- annual meeting of the Carterton Women’s Institute was held in the Masonic Hall, Carterton, yesterday afternoon, Miss O. W. Wolters presiding ovei’ a good attendance of members. The report and balance sheet for 1938 were adopted. Mrs H. Knutson was elected president for the ensuing twelve months. Mrs A. F. Pink as relieving secretary and Miss Wolters as relieving president. They were presented with posies from the members by Mrs N. P. Williams. Reports were read by the convenors of the Garden Circle and the Arts and Crafts and the Drama Circle. The convenors were presented with shoulder sprays. Only eight members had been proposed for the committee, Mesdames L. R. Aplin, J. Archer, A. Pinfold. C. E. White, L. Swan, C. Porter and E. T. Beaven. Four others will be added. Mesdames A. F. Pink and A. Knutson were appointed delegates to the Federation meeting to held on April 19. Mr H. M. B. Trapp was -appointed auditor. Miss Wolters made reference to the forthcoming visit of Mrs Freeman and of the arrangements for the Pan-Paci-fic Conference. Mrs Adams won the points prize for all competitions held during the year, Miss Wolters being second. The programme competition was won by Mrs Geo Steffert and the jumbled fruit by Mrs Geo Steffert. Afternoon tea was provided and served by the retiring committee. PARKVALE.
There was a large attendance at the annual meeting of the Parkvale Women’s Institute held on Wednesday, The president, Mrs W. Adlam, presided. Four new members were elected, these being Mesdames H. Rayner, W. George and Misses J. Warrington and H. McKinnon. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs N. Peacock; vice-presidents, Mesdames B. Renall and W. Adlam; secretary, Mrs W. Hammond; treasurer, Mrs D. Adams; committee, Mesdames L. Nolan and J. Rayner, Misses M. Adlam, E. Brasell, E. Martin, S. Rayner and E. Taylforth; reporter, Miss M. Adlam. On behalf of the members Mrs Adams thanked Mrs Adlam, the retiring president, for her work during her term of’ office since the commencement ; c f the Institute and presented her with a beautiful fountain pen. as a mark of appreciation of her services. ■ The results of the competitions were ■as follows:— Senior—Pikelets: Mrs Nolan 1, .Mrs M. Johnson 2, Mrs J. Taylforth 3. Best bloom: Mrs L. Rayner 1, Mrs R. Williams, 2, Mrs D. Adams 3. Junior.—Best fancywork: Miss L. Rayner 1, Miss E. Taylforth 2, Miss J. Warrington 3. Best bloom: Miss A. Williams 1, Miss E. Brasell 2, Miss J. Warrington 3. Arrangements were made tor a dance to be he]£ in the Parkvale Hall on March 29 in aid of the funds of the, Institute. Mrs A. Pink, Carterton, gave an interesting demonstration on the art of ■making brass book-ends, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The committee of the Institute were the hostesses for the afternoon.
MATARAWA-DALEFIELD. The .first meeting since the forming iof the Matarawa-Dalefield Branch of the Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday last in the Matarawa Schoolroom, there being about 30 ladies present. Mrs Ross Gallon presided. A dance has been arranged for the purpose' of raising funds, and will be held on Easter Monday in the Dalefield Hall, and it is hoped that it will be well supported. Miss O. Wolters president of the Carterton Institute, kindly acted as judge of the cooking and flower competition, the winners being: —Flowers: Mrs Ted Smith 1, Mrs Meyrick 2, Mrs R. J. Gallon 3. Cooking: Mrs Brooks 1, Mrs Groube 2, Mrs E. G. Knowles 3. Mesdames O. and G. Brazendale and H. Bain were hostesses for the afternoon tea, after which-two very amusing competitions were held, Mrs M. J. Parker winning one and Miss J. Knowles the other. ->
