LORD NUFFIELD ENTERTAINED. BY AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION OFFICERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Wairarapa Automobile Association can claim the honour of being the first association in New Zealand to entertain Lord Nuffield, England’s greatest industrialist and philanthropist who paid a brief visit to Featherston yesterday afternoon. Lord Nuffield was entertained by the committee and officers of the Association. CROQUET. CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS. In the champion of champion croquet games commenced on Tuesday Mrs Saunders (Featherston) beat Mrs Watson (Haunui) in the A grade. Mrs Hankers (Haunui) beat Mrs Thomas (Martinborough) in the B grade. Mrs Thompson (Masterton) beat Mrs White (Haunui) in the C grade. Mrs Saunders (Featherston) beat Mrs Polson (Masterton), 26/5, 26/17, 26/18. Mrs E. O’Neale (Featherston) beat Mrs Thompson (Masterton), 26/14 (C grade). Mrs Hankers (Haunui) beat Mrs Scrivener (Masterton), 26/14, 26/15 (C grade). Mrs White beat Mrs Davis 26/20 (C grade) in the Haunui championship. ' Personal. The death occurred at Featherston on Tuesday of Mrs Helen Jean, wife of Mr H. Townsend, Pigeon Bush. The funeral took place at the Karori Cemetery yesterday. Gas Mask On View. A gas mask is on view in Mr H. Clark’s window. It was obtained by Mrs S. Cundy, a Featherston visitor to London during the recent crisis. Card Tourneys. There were 11 tables at the Home and School Association’s euchre tournament held on Tuesday night. The prize-winners were: Ladies, Mrs Cross 1, Mrs Hosking 2; men, Mrs A. Tait, Mr Alex McCleod 2. Mr B. Fuge won the consolation prize. There was a good attendance at the dance and euchre held in the Pahautea Hall on Saturday night. The winners of the euchre tourney were: Ladies, Miss N. Corlet 1, Mrs P. Cade 2; men, Mr S. Himona 1, Mr P. Matinga 2. The Monte Carlo was won by Mr and Mrs Enoka. Volunteer Fire Brigade. The monthly meeting of the Brigade was held on Monday evening. Supt Tidswell presided over a good muster of members. Accounts totalling £5 7s 8d were passed. Members commented on the progress of the construction of the new fire engine, and congratulated the construction committee of its good work. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr F. C. Benton for the donation of three dozen fireplug indicators. It was decided to hold a 2-man competition on April 2 for the cup presented by Mr H. Buck. At the conclusion of the meeting Supt Tidswell presented Fireman Worsfold with a 2-yeai- silver bar, upon the. completion of 21 years’ service. Supt Tidswell referred to the high festeem in which Fireman Worsley was held.
