On the fifth day of the final test between Marylebone and South Africa Marylebone completed the first innings with a total of 316 and at stumps South Africa had lost three wickets in the second innings for 193. Play finished early on accouni of bad light. South Africa, alter England’s minor collapse, plodded along as in the first innings. Vanderbijl at one stage took an hour to add nine runs but, when the total had reached 190 without the loss of a wicket, a sudden change came over the game in the failing light and three wickets fell for one run and Hammond dropped a catch from Nourse.
