PALESTINE ISSUES
REQUEST MADE BY JEWS CLARIFICATION OF BRITISH PROPOSALS. SAFEGUARDS OF NATIONAL HOME. •t (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.17 a.m.) RUGBY, March 8. British representatives met some delegates of Arab States to the Palestine Conference and members of the Jewish Agency last night, and informal talks were continued until midnight. “The Times” understands that the Jewish Conference Committee, after considering possible counter-propos-als as alternatives to the British suggestions, decided to ask the Government to clarify its proposals, and in' particular to state whether it intends to safeguard the future growth of the Jewish national home, as in that case Jews might be prepared to discuss plans involving the end of the mandate. BRITISH PROPOSALS NOT TO BE MODIFIED IN PRINCIPLE. ODDS AGAINST AGREEMENT. (Received This Day, Noon.) LONDON, March 8. It is authoritatively stated that the British-Palestine proposals, which are not subject to modification in principle, will be submitted to the Jews and Arabs next week. A short period will be allowed for discussion and, if there is no agreement the conference will be closed and the British policy announced. Those well-informed admit that the odds are against an agreement. There will be no further formal talks this week. British Ministers are collaborating and consulting with the Palestine High Commissioner on the proposed constitutional changes. The remaining members of the American Jewish delegation have left for home.
