GARDEN COMPETITION

4 PRESENTATION OF PRIZES BY LORD NUFFIELD MUNICIPAL HALL THRONGED. WELCOME BY THE PRESIDENT. A feature of yesterday’s Flower i Show was the presentation by Lord Nuffield of the prizes awarded in the recent garden competition conducted by the Masterton Horticultural Society. The Municipal Hall was thronged with people, so much so that it was difficult to believe there were any flowers in the hall at all. Lord Nuffield was introduced by Mr H, E. Pither, president of the society. Sir Charles Norwood, Mrs Knox Gilmer, and Mrs Pither were also present, besides members of the society’s executive and others. “It is a very proud moment and a great honour and privilege to .my society to have the pleasure to welcome Lord Nuffield this afternoon,” said Mr Pither. "We are all the more pleased as we are sensible of the fact that his time in New Zealand is so limited that it is really wonderful of him to spare his valuable time to come here this afternoon. We are certainly sorry that he will not have thtejopportunity of seeing the splendid farm land that surrounds our town but if he looks around this grand display of flowers I have no doubt that he will understand that we are not lacking in beautiful gardens. I cannot let this opportunity pass without referring to the affection with which he is regarded by all of us.” (Applause). Mr Pither proceeded to refer to the great assistance Lord. Nuffield had given to those in need. His action was an inspiration to all of them. “There are many suffering cripples in this district,” said Mr Pither, "and there are also societies which with your wonderful help, sir, are trying to alleviate their suffering and I feel that they would like to be in my shoes this afternoon and be able to say to you those two simple words that have a wealth of meaning —‘thank you.’ ” Mr Pither stated that the society had just concluded a garden competition and he would like to thank the donors of the prizes, the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, who had initiated the idea and was unfortunately absent in Dunedin for the Municinal Conference; Mrs W. A. Burling, Messrs P. J. Borthwick, H. L. Esau and L. Needham. Mr Pither then asked Lord Nuffield to present the prizes, as follow: Half-acre gardens. C. D. Bauckham 1, S. Clarke 2, Miss M. Wriglev 3. Quarter-acre gardens,, C. H. Jarvis 1, J. J. Andrew 2, J. McGregor 3. Esau Challenge Shield, for best garden in the competition, C. D. Bauckham. Burling Cup, Mrs J. E. Broad. Special prize given by Mr Needham, C. D. Bauckham. Lord Nuffield thanked them for the way in which they had received him. The number of people who had gone out of their way to show their affection for him meant much more to him than anything else. He would go back to the Old Country and take with him those very kindly feelings which had been shown towards him and in return. he would do in the future as he had in the past, what he could tor tms great little country.
