FOREIGN FILMS
INTRODUCTION IN NEW ZEALAND. VIENNESE AND SOVIET PRODUCTIONS. Arrangements for the introduction to New Zealand audiences of recent films from Viennese and Russian studios are at present being made by Mr N. Scheinwald, who has established 1 his headquarters in Wellington. Some of his films have already arrived in the Dominion, and others are on the way. “I am sure the New Zealand public would welcome foreign films if they could be introduced here,” Mr Scheinwald said. ‘-Foreign pictures are artistically produced and in many cases are far better in this respect than American films. Their originality in itself is of great value, while perfect acting, beautiful and colourful scenery and excellent photography are also important factors.
“Musical films are available with such famous singers as Tauber, Gigli, Kiepura, Tito Schipa, and Lucien Boyer. New Zealanders appreciate music, and therefore should approve of such films. There would be no difficulty in understanding them in spite of foreign dialogue, as they would be sub-titled in English. Simplicity, pictorial realism. gay music and brilliant photography are qualities that have brought Soviet films outstanding success in England and America. Russian producers who have gained world fame include Eisenstein, Puslovkin and Romm, and Eisenstein was invited to direct a film at Hollywood. Incidentally, upon arrival there he refused to undertake a sensational picture that involved a departure from the pure realism that has always been the basis of his productions.
