W. N. MASEFIELD

WINNER OF KINO’S PRIZE at trentham SON FINISHES IN THIRD PLACE. F. BOWES OF AUCKLAND SECOND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Experience and age triumphed over youth in the final match for the .championship rifle belt at Trentham yesterday. when Captain W. N. Masefield, of the Blenheim Rifle Club, won his, fourth King’s Prize with an score of 520 out of a possible 550. Aftel his success he was ‘'chaired an. cai ried shoulder-high by fellow maiksmen to the Y.M.C.A. Hall, where he, was presented with his trophies by Governor-General, Lord Galway. He also received a personal gift of a signed photograph of Lord Galway in fulldress uniform. This is in accordance with the practice followed by Vice, Regal representatives in the other Dominions and at Bisley, where the King’s Prizeman is presented by the King with an autographed photograph. Second place in the championship was obtained by F. Bowes, of the Auckland City Rifle Club, and the champion’s son, B. Masefield, of the NelsonMarlborough Mounted Rifles, gained third place following a shoot-off with A. R. Symons, of the Ashhurst Rifle Club. Before the start of the final Masefield junior had a two-point lead, but he had three redoubtable opponents immediately behind him in his father, Bowes and Symons. Bowes had won the belt in 1935, Masefield senior in 1914, 1929 and in 1936, and Symons, who finished eight for the King's Prize last year, had won the service championship in 1936 and the army championship in 1929.
