ORIWERE MAKES FULL AMENDS
(By
“The Cynic.”)
Orwere made full amends for his disappointing form at Te Aroha when he stayed on solidly in the Buckland Hack at Pukekohe to wear down Corato and beat him narrowly. Orwere has been racing fairly consistently this season, starting on 17 occasions for four wins, a second and four thirds.
Miss Clipper. Miss Clipper showed encouraging form in the VZaiuku Hack at Pukekohe the other day when she finished well to beat all but Noitaro. Miss Clipper had shown promise in her trials prior to the meeting and she will need only to go on the right way to improve on her Pukekohe running. Her first and sole success was achieved at Tauranga last season.
Running of Kittle. Prior to the Franklin meeting few horses had been working more attractively at Te Rapa than Kittle and it was anticipated that she would show to advantage in the Bombay Handicap. However, at no stage of the running did she flatter the hopes of her supporters. Kittle has nof shown her best on firm going and should be seen to advantage when the tracks ease again. Change of Stable. Studley Royal has been leased by Mr C. Holdsworth to A. McMullan, who intends to take him to the West Coast for the Easter circuit. The Paper Money gelding, although affected with throat trouble, should pay his way on the trip. Sold for Auckland. The three-year-old filly, Every Port, by Winning Hit from Sailor’s Love, a sister to Fast Passage, has been sold by the Clifford Trustees to be trained in future at Ellerslie. Death of Valuable Filly. Mr L. C. Hazlett recently had the misfortune to lose his two-year-old filly by Gustavo from Ravenna. This filly, a very handsome chestnut, was in A. H. McDonald’s stable during the early part of the season, and on looks was one of the most attractive of Ravenna’s progeny. It was Mr Hazlett’s intention to hack her about till next season, and her loss, from a breeding as well as racing point of view, is a serious one. Sister to Kelly. The four-year-old gelding Clansman, by Vaals from Judy Kelly, a full sister to Kelly, has rejoined J. M. Buchanan’s team, at Ellerslie. For Trentham. The yearling filly by Iliad from Quietly purchased at the Elderslie dispersal sale on behalf of Mrs Edkjns, of Kerikeri, has been sent to H. Telford’s stable, at Trentham, to be trained. Yearling Filly. The first of Princess Doreen’s progeny has arrived at Riccarton to be trained by T. H. Gillett for Mr E. Hay. This is a chestnut yearling filly by Iliad. She is well grown, and on appearances and breeding should make a smart galloper. Princess Doreen, now at the Elderslie stud, has a chestnut foal at foot by Solicitor-General, and is in foal again to the same sire. In Work Again. Flame Queen is again a member of S. Barr’s team. She has benefited by a good spell, and is in excellent health to start on another preparation. Brother to Convivial. Mr H. A. Rhind, who formerly owneded Pangolin, has had no horse to carry his colours for some time, but they will be seen again in a few months (says a Riccarton report). He has acquired the three-year-old Lord Warden —Jazz Girl gelding brother to Convivial and half-brother to Plumage, and the horse has joined Plumage in P. McGrath’s stable in good order to start on a preparation. Noitaro Makes Amends. Noitaro made amends for recent failures when, after being handy to the leaders throughout the running, she finished solidly to place the issue beyond doubt at the distance. It was Noitaro’s thirteenth race this term and her first success during that period. Now that she has struck form Noitaro should win further for her connections. Lornacre Fails. Lornacre made a bold bid among the sprinters at the Franklin meeting, hitting the front from the outset and failing only in the last little bit to go on with it. Though he finished fourth, only heads separated the first five past lhe post. Lornacre relished the firm going and now that he appears to be coming right again he will bear watching in engagements ahead. Sir Lysander. Sir Lysander, who in his engagements prior to the Pukekohe fixture had been showing a deficiency of stamina, scored an effortless win in the Tuakau Stakes. Jumping to the front from barrier rise he soon opened up a break of five lengths on the field and in lhe straight he carried on to give nothing else a chance. The success of Sir Lysander provided the Reilly stable with a welcome change of luck. Little Artist. Little. Artist made a bold showing among the sprinters at Pukekohe and the fact that only heads separated the placed trio adds merit to his performance. It was far his best effort this season and one on which he may soon improve. Mio Fratollo. \ Mio Fratollo was not suited bj r the firm nature of the going at Pukekohe. yet his forward showing suggested that he will bear keeping in mind when rain falls to soften the tracks. He was produced in splendid order by A. C. Jones. Australian Sires. Heroic is well on his way to Ziead the winning sires' list in Australia for lhe seventh successive season, a feat not hitherto accomplished by an Australian sire. The son of Valais has already established a record, as he is the first sire in the history of Australian racing to have been at the top of the list for six years in succession. It will ptobably be many years before
another sire accomplishes such a feat. Lochiel was at the head of the winning sires’ list five times, and so was Maltster and Valais, the sire of Heroic. Valais, however, was the only one of the trio to be on top for five consecutive years. The first half of the 1938-39 racing season ended on January 31, and 27 of the progeny of Heroic had won 55.1 races and-stakes to the value of £22,641. The Buzzard is not far behind him, as 3 of his progeny have won £19,229, so he is a little less than £3500 behind Heroic. These two are likely to have a keen tussle over the remaining six months of the season. Gay Lothario has done extremely well again this season, and the Gay Crusader horse is third on the list with 29 winners of 52 races and £14,090. Manfred, who was in fourteenth place at the end of the first quarter of the season, is in fourth place, not far behind Gay Lothario. Manolive and Grecian Princess have been good winners for Manfred during the last three months. Constant Son, Beau Pere, Lord Quex, and Windbag’also occupy high places in the list, and among the newcomers Manitoba has done extremely well. The Manna horse was represented for the first time this season, and four of his progeny have won five races and stakes amounting to £3015 —a splendid start for a young sire. His winners are the Maribyrong Plate winner Aurania, Zondo (Debutante Stakes, Mimosa Stakes, and Federal Stakes, second division), Cyclist (Ottawa Stakes), and Banniere.
