SWIMMING SPORTS
ST. PATRICK’S SCHOOL EVENTS CHAMPIONSHIP AND OTHER EVENTS. SOME EXCITING FINISHES. The pupils of St. Patrick’s School held their annual swimming sports in the Dixon Street baths on Tuesday morning under ideal conditions. All the events were keenly contested and some exciting finishes were witnessed. The Principal and staff wish to thank Mr Kelly, custodian, for his willing assistance during the season, and all instructors who gave unremitting attention to the boys and girls during the Learn to Swim Week. The boys’ championship was won by Michael Ryan with 11 points, John. Hourigan being second with 10 points, and Denis Cross third with 8 points. The girls’ championship was won by Greta Nyhan, the runner-up being Beryl Goodwin. Following arp the results:— BOYS’ EVENTS. Learners’ Race: Eric Olson 1, David Mannering 2, John Gordon 3. Eight and under nine years: Paul Corry 1, David Keen 2, Garth Curry 3. Nine, and under ten: John Gordon 1, William Kerslake 2, Robert Camden 3. Ten and under eleven: John Corry 1, John Ryan 2, John Williams 3. Eleven and under twelve: Michael Ryan 1, John Hiroti 2, William Orange 3. Twelve years and over: John Hiroti 1, Frank O’Brien 2, Terence Keisenberg 3. Boys’ championship: Brian Gill 1, Frank O’Brien 2, Michael Ryan 3. Breaststroke: John Hourigan 1, Michael Ryan 2, Edward Hamill 3i Diving for plates: John Hourigan and Frank O’Brien, equal, 1; Denis Cross 3. Plunge: Edward Hamill 1, Brian Gill 2, Patrick Gleeson 3. Swimming under water: Denis Cross 1, John Hourigan 2, Edward Hamill 3. Balloon Race: Michael Ryan 1, Denis Cross 2, John Hourigan 3. Sidestroke: Edward Hamill 1, Michael Ryan 2, Denis Cross 3. Backstroke: Michael Ryan 1, John Corry 2, Denis Cross 3. Diving (three styles): John Hourigan 1, Terry Keisenberg and William Orange equal 2, Patrick Gleeson, Michael Ryan, Denis Cross equal 4. Boys’ relay: Brian Gill’s team 1, John Hourigan’s team 2, Frank O’Brien’s team 3. A splendid performance was, put up in this event. GIRLS’ EVENTS. Learners’ race: Joan Cross 1, Josephine McKelvey 2, Maureen Cairns 3. Eight years and under nine: Maureen O’Brien 1, Betty Nyhan 2. Nine and under ten: Joan Cross 1, Josephine McKelvey 2, Maureen Cairns 3. Ten and under eleven: Irene Scala 1, Peggy O’Neill 2. Eleven and under twelve: Kathleen Condon 1, Mary O’Neill 2. Twelve and under thirteen: Beryl Goodwin 1, Eileen McArley 2, Greta Nyhan 3. Breaststroke: Greta Nyhan 1, Kathleen Condon 2, Irene Scala 3.
